Luthier’s Weblog 6/26/07 With bridge plate and X-brace laid out, the builder contemplates the rest of the bracing plan. With the sound hole out of the string path and safely ensconced in the tightly constricted area of the cutaway, there is no need to provide supportive bracing for it. The north quadrant described by the X-brace is divided into two roughly equal areas by the placement of a brace abutting the treble X-brace member and parallel to the upper bass side leg of the X-brace. The south quadrant is also divided into two approximately equal areas by placement of a brace abutting The lower treble member of the X-brace and ending about an inch below the end of the lower bass side X-brace. The east and west quadrants are each divided into three roughly equal areas by placement of two braces abutting the lower X-brace member parallel to the upper X-brace member. The resultant bracing pattern is much simpler than a typical X-braced instrument, with fewer braces. The builder asked me to attach a photo of one of my braced tops, which are remarkably similar to his. The purpose of the bracing is to…….what? Handle load. This is a pretty complex topic, on which the builder has a great deal to explain. Ross Teigen 8:51 am
